CHENNAI: Animal activists have demanded that
PETA India apologise for spreading false information about the health condition of elephant Jayamalyatha of Srivilliputhur temple.
Poovulagin Nanbargal, an NGO, said a very old video of the elephant was being circulated with “malicious intentions by some vested interests, including PETA India.”
“Far from the truth, Jayamalyatha (Joymala in Assam) is being taken care of by authorities very well. She is in good health and is doing great. A shower facility and a special bath facility have also been created for her. A committee of experts have been looking after her health and have been visiting her on regular intervals. Even the day before, a committee visited her consisting of a veterinarian and certified her good health. PETA India should apologise for spreading fake news,” said the NGO.
After PETA posted the video on Twitter, many people including Bollywood celebrities mistook it for a recent video and demanded action against those who ill-treated her. The Assam government wanted to take back all the nine elephants, including Jayamalyatha, it had leased out to
Tamil Nadu temples.
