KANPUR: Police on Tuesday claimed to have solved the murder of a 30-year-old rag picker on Monday night with the help of closed-circuit television camera footage.
The Nazirabad police team, led by senior officials, picked up the suspect, Ankur, after recovery of the dead body of Balbir from the area on Tuesday morning. He confessed to having murdered Balbir, a rag picker, who used to sleep at a footpath with him.
Ankur said he was angry with Balbir as he had recently stolen his gas cylinder.
He allegedly attacked Balbir with his wife Sheelu with sticks on Monday night and escaped thereafter.
The murder came to light on Tuesday morning when locals spotted the body with wounds and informed the Nazirabad police.
According to police, they did not have any clue about the suspect involved in the murder. “We started scanning the CCTV footage and nailed down Ankur and his wife Sheelu," ACP Nazirabad Santosh Kumar said.
“The couple was hiding in a nearby locality. They, too, got information that the police were tracking them. Before they could escape, we caught them,” he said.
CCTV footage revealed that Ankur and Balbir had a fight over theft of a gas cylinder due to which the former along with his wife killed Balbir, the ACP said. “The couple has been arrested and sent to jail after being booked under the relevant sections of the IPC on Tuesday,” the ACP added.
