Thiruvananthapuram: Security measures have been beefed up in the district in view of the Onam weekly celebrations, informed city police commissioner G Sparjan Kumar on Tuesday.
Over a thousand police officers were deployed at celebration venues and public places. Two deputy police commissioners will monitor the security measures under the guidance of the city police commissioner.
Special control room has been arranged at Kanakakunnu, a major venue of Onam celebrations. As many as 107 CCTV cameras have been placed at various places. Strict police observation will be in place at Kanakakunnu, Central Stadium and Poojappura ground. Shadow police, including women officers, were deployed at major venues to prevent atrocities against women.
Police must be alerted while going on excursion as police patrolling will be intensified near houses which would remain locked for days.
Traffic restrictions will also be in place as part of the security measures, said police.
Vehicles can be parked at university office compound, university college ground, Sanskrit College ground, Vazhuthacaud Women’s College ground, Poojappura LBS compound ground,
Kerala water authority compound, Music college ground, LMS ground, St Joseph school ground, Fort high school ground, Salvation Army school ground, Pettah boys and girls higher secondary school ground, Government boys and girls higher secondary school ground, Chala, Government girls higher secondary school, Peroorkada, Jimmy George Indoor Stadium, Attakulangara Central School, SMV school ground, Arts college ground, Kuravankonam, St Antony’s school and Barton Hill Engineering College.
Police warned of strict action against traffic rule violations, such as rash driving, over speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, etc. Parking of vehicles at main and sub-roads is strictly prohibited. Phone numbers must be displayed on vehicles before entering celebration venues after parking them.
