CHENNAI: A six-member gang, hacked to death a man on Monday night and left his brother with severe injuries after they picked up a fight with the gang for playing devotional songs at high volume during idol immersion procession, near Pammal on Sunday.
The Sankar Nagar police have arrested seven people in connection with the crime. The accused were identified as Mohammad Ilyaz, 23, Nawaz, 26, Vasanth, 25, Jayakumar, 25, Rajesh Kumar, 34, Vetri, 26 and Yuvaraj, 26.
On Sunday, Gnanasambandam, 45 and his brother Saravanan, 47 allegedly confronted the gang for playing loud devotional songs on speakers on the occasion of Vinayakar Chaturthi idol immersion.
A scuffle broke out when the brothers warned that a complaint would be lodged against them. Later, when Gnanasambandam and Saravanan went to a liquor shop in Nagalkeni fish market, the gang followed them.
An argument broke out between the brothers and the gang. The gang members then chased and hacked to death Gnanasambandam. Saravanan was seriously injured. A few passersby came to their rescue, when the gang fled the scene.
The Sankar Nagar police recovered Gnanasambandam's body and sent it for postmortem to Chromepet Government Hospital. Saravanan was first sent to Chromepet Government Hospital and then shifted to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital where his condition is said to be critical.
