Conman arrested for duping women of jewellery & money

Chandrapur: The Local crime branch (LCB) has arrested a conman accused of seducing multiple elderly women through his fake ID on Facebook and matrimonial sites and robbing them of their money and valuables.
Accused Soham Vasnik from Bhandara was netted for robbing a 67-year-old woman from Kothari in Ballarpur taluka of 24 tola gold after staying overnight at her home. Investigations revealed that Vasnik tricked and robbed women from Nagpur, Yavatmal and Bhandra in a similar fashion in the past.
LCB in-charge PI Balasaheb Khade said Vasnik hails from a small village Bhagdi in Lakhandur taluka of Bhandra district. He works as a professor in a college. However, he made a fake ID in the name of one Dr Sumit Borkar from Akola on Facebook and matrimonial sites. He used to pose as an MBBS, MD (gynaecologist) working at Government Medical College, Akola.
He portrayed himself as a widower with a daughter and posted a fake photo of a cute girl on Facebook. “After getting friendly with women on Facebook or matrimonial sites, he used to lure them with the promise of marriage. He even sent pictures of his fake ID as a medical officer at a medical college in Akola as well as a payslip of Rs 1.44 lakh per month to win their confidence” said PI Khade.
Vasnik would go to the homes of women, make up a story that he’s under financial stress and then ask them for money or jewellery.
The accused lured the elderly woman from Kothari in a similar fashion and stayed overnight at her home. Failing to convince her to give him money, he decamped with 240gms of gold early in the morning after the woman went out for her morning walk.
After a complaint was lodged under section 380 of IPC, SP Arvind Salve instructed the
LCB to launch an investigation.
Khade tracked the accused in Bhandara through his fake profile on Facebook and matrimonial site with the help of cyber experts. A team was dispatched to Bhandara and the accused was arrested. Cops seized 290gm of gold and two mobile phones collectively worth Rs 12.03 lakh from Vasnik who confessed to robbing three women from Yavatmal, Bhandara and Nagpur.
Cops have informed the victims about Vasnik’s arrest. Khade has called upon the victims who have been robbed in a similar fashion to come forward and lodge a complaint against Vasnik.
