Mumbai: Boy sets self ablaze after lover's suicide bid, stable

MUMBAI: A 19-year-old college student attempted suicide by setting himself ablaze after he saw an online video of his girlfriend slitting her wrist on Tuesday. Vakola police said the boy got depressed seeing the video and decided to go live himself while ending his life.
The boy's family who witnessed the incident immediately doused the fire and rushed him to a nearby hospital where his condition is stated to be stable. His girlfriend, too, is stable as her parents had immediately administered her medical treatment.
No FIR has been registered in both incidents. "The boy took the extreme step on Monday night after he saw his girlfriend's video posted on social media. Police are probing the case and, if needed, a case will be registered. The boy suffered 10% burns. He claimed he took the extreme step because the girl's parents had rejected his marriage proposal," said Vakola police senior inspector Pradip More.
The families of both teens reside in a chawl in Santa Cruz (East). Vakola police have made a diary entry of the incident and are probing the matter.
