NAGPUR: Suraj Kawade, an accused slapped with the stringent Maharashtra control of organized crime Act (MCOCA), was intercepted at the gate of the Nagpur Central Jail after guards found ganja packets and mobile batteries inside the charge sheet file.
The alert gate officer and guards seized 51 gms of ganja and 15 mobile batteries from Kawade.
CP Amitesh Kumar, who is supervising the investigation, has suspended two cops from the prisoner escort cell. On the other hand, four jail guards have been rewarded by DIG prison (eastern region) Swati Sathe.
Jail SP Anup Kumar Kumre said Kawade and five others had gone to court for their hearing. “The six MCOCA accused were being frisked and checked at the gate as a routine practice before taking them inside the prison. The guards found the documents unusually heavy and wanted to check the pages,” said Kumre, adding, packets of narcotics and batteries were attached with gum and tape to the pages.
The jail authorities later alerted Dhantoli police who registered an offence against Kawade. Cops are trying to ascertain whether there are some others involved in the crime.
Sources said the role of some advocates are also being probed by the cops. “We are scanning CCTV footages of the court premises and also gathering manual intelligence,” said the CP.
