KOLKATA: Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Monday referred to the problems plaguing teachers' recruitment in the state and said it was impossible for her or even "God to have 100% control over every-thing".
"Thousands and lakhs of people work in a government. The blame falls on higher-ups even if something wrong has been done at the lower level. But can I have 100% control over everything? Can God have 100% control over everything? I am nothing in comparison," she said.
"My conduct will define whether I am right or wrong. Not everyone is right in the world, neither are all five fingers of a hand same. You cannot blame the entire society if one individual misbehaves. This is not right," Banerjee added, using the Bengal government's Teachers' Day programme at the Biswa Bangla Mela Prangan to assure the community that her government was committed to dispensing "justice". The state government would recruit 89,000 teachers, Banerjee promised, adding: "Those who have not got justice will get justice from us only."
But whether the recruitment would be completed in three months or drag on for a year would depend on the few people who believed "will not eat myself and will not let others eat too", she said. "These people will not spare Rs 5 for those who do not have anything to eat but are ready to file PILs. There is a PIL for everything you do," Banerjee said.
"It would be wrong to blame everyone for the mistakes (committed) by a few. People can commit a wrong or two while working," the Bengal CM said, adding: "There are times when even good people get into trouble."
Banerjee then spoke about "what happened during the CPM regime": "Try finding a document from the CPM regime. You can spot the wrongs only if you have documents. We have documents, they have none."
Teach country's history to impart real education: CM
Speaking about "what happened during the CPM regime", CM Mamata Banerjee said at an event in Kolkata on Monday that her government had "found no file, document (from the CPM regime)" .
"You can spot the wrongs only if you have documents. We have documents, they have none. I still remember former CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee saying he did not want to be a part of a cabinet of thieves. You saw the Vyapam scam in Madhya Pradesh. Was their education minister arrested? There have been 54 suicides because of it," she added.
"I met a few young boys and girls sitting on the road and wanted something to be done for them. The education minister at that time told me that their marks did not permit that. But I kept insisting that something be done for these young people," she added.
The CM urged academics to teach the country's history and how India became independent. "If we do not know the complete history, how can we impart real education to the next generation?" she asked, adding: "Many of us were not born with a golden spoon. We belonged to normal middle-class families where we were taught our history and values."
Banerjee also urged state education minister Bratya Basu to consult experts and include ethics and character-building in the school curriculum. "It cannot happen overnight. But my identity should not be defined by the money I have. Money may be here today, it may not be there tomorrow," she said at the event, where 61 teachers were felicitated.
