Rajkot: A historysheeter of the notorious Gedia gang in Surendranagar district unleashed terror outside a food mall near Malvan on Dhrangadhra-Viramgam Road and fired five rounds, three at the employees and two at a restaurant.
The accused Asif Khan Malek, who is known for his notoriety in the area, had demanded Rs 15,000 per month as protection money from the restaurant’s cashier Kuldeepsinh Vala on September 1 when the latter asked him to pay for an energy drink, water bottle and other stuff. Malek slapped him and told him that he would not allow the restaurant to run if he was not paid Rs 15,000 a month. The manager Harendrasinh had intervened and they let go of bill then.
At around 5.30 am on September 4, Malek again came to the restaurant after parking the car on the highway. He saw Vala and Harendrasinh standing on the terrace and started abusing them for not paying the protection money. He then fired three rounds at them from his unlicensed revolver. The duo ducked the bullets.
“Malek then fired two rounds at the restaurant and left the place. After Vala lodged a complaint, we combed the Gedia village and nabbed Malek on Monday,” said M D Chaudhary, police inspector, Surendranagar local crime branch (LCB). Malek has several offences lodged against him, said Chaudhary.
