AHMEDABAD: Congress's Gujarat poll campaign got off to a sop-laden start on Monday, with Rahul Gandhi seemingly tapping into rival AAP's template to roll out promises like 300 free units of electricity to every household, besides farm-loan waivers of up to Rs 3 lakh and LPG at Rs 500 a cylinder.
If voted to government, Congress would also build 3,000 new English-medium schools, provide free medical care worth up to Rs 10 lakh and free education to girls and extend a subsidy of Rs 5 a litre to milk producers, Rahul said during the party's "parivartan sankalp rally" along Ahmedabad's Sabarmati riverfront.
"The BJP government here will waive loans of top industrialists, but have you ever heard of them waiving farm loans? What would Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel have done? Would he have waived loans of farmers or that of a few industrialists?" he said.
Rahul alleged that BJP built a monument to Sardar Patel in the form of the world's tallest statue, only to dishonour the cause for which he lived. "They attacked all those for whom Sardar Patel fought and sacrificed his entire life," he said.
