To encourage thermal tourism, UNWTO join hands

The World Tourism Organization has partnered with the European Historic Thermal Towns Association and the Spanish region of Galicia to declare plans for organizing an international conference on thermal tourism.

On World Tourism Day, the International Congress on Thermal Tourism for 2022 starts off in Ourense, Galicia from September 27th and will continue till 29th. To coincide with the declaration, UNWTO and the EHTTA, its Affiliate Member, have signed a MoU which is targeted at further promoting thermal tourism and its advantages.


Manuel Baltar, the Association´s President , said that the rising demand for open-air and nature-based activities of tourism after COVID has made thermal tourism a significant section for the future.

Alfonso Rueda, the President of the Regional Government of Galicia and head of the Axencia Turismo Galicia, added that in Spain, Galicia is the first thermal destination and in Europe, it’s the second one with splendid thermal stations like Ourense.


Thermal Tourism is directly joined to the natural and cultural environment and symbolize as sustainable tourism’s one of the most valuable forms. Besides promoting health, learning and entertainment, it supports jobs and encourages social opportunity, like rural destinations as well.


UNWTO is all devoted to encourage thermal tourism as an influential tool that would add to defend the cultural and natural heritage of the world as well as offer socio-economic advantages, including the renewal of villages and the development of opportunities of permanent employment and income-earning.
