PATNA: Former special CBI judge Shiv Pal Singh (59), who convicted former Bihar CM and RJD chief Lalu Prasad in two fodder scam cases, married Nutan Tiwari, a BJP leader and also a practising lawyer at Godda court where Singh is posted now. Singh's first wife died in 2006 while the bride, 50, had also lost her first husband in a road mishap a few years ago.
Singh, a native of Uttar Pradesh, is scheduled to retire from the Jharkhand judicial service on March 31, 2023 on completion of 60 years of age, official records reveal.
Both have children from their first wedlock. Nutan's popularity as a BJP leader can be gauged from the fact that she remained the Godda Nagar Parishad vice-chairperson for several years. She also remained in the BJP state committee in different capacity.
Singh, the additional district and sessions judge-1 at Godda district court for the last three years, married Nutan a few days back at the Basukinath temple in Dumka district, lawyers close to her told TOI over phone. "Judge Singh has a son and a daughter from his first wife. Nutan also has a daughter. Their children and families gave consent for the wedding," they said. Their marriage has become a topic of discussion in Bihar and Jharkhand. Intellectuals and legal fraternity have appreciated Singh for this intercaste marriage with a widow.
During his posting as the special CBI judge at Ranchi district court, Singh had convicted Lalu in two fodder scam cases. On March 24, 2018, he had sentenced Lalu to 14 years jail term and a fine of Rs60 lakh in connection with the alleged fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 3.13 crore from Dumka treasury in the early 1990s. It was the fourth fodder scam case in which Lalu got convicted.
Earlier on January 6, 2018, judge Singh awarded a three-and-a-half years prison term and a fine of Rs10 lakh to Lalu in the case pertaining to illegal withdrawal of Rs 89.27 lakh from Deoghar treasury between 1991 and 1994.
