Gurgaon: The city is unlikely to receive any rain for the next three days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
This year’s monsoon has been disappointing, with seasonal rainfall reporting a significant shortfall of 28%. Between June 1 and September 5, the city has received 311.2mm rainfall, against the normal of 430.5mm.
Last year, Gurgaon saw bountiful rainfall and ended up with a surplus of 47% — is reported 738.9mm rainfall in the four months of the monsoon season, of which September saw 228.2mm rainfall against the normal of 88.5mm (a massive surplus of 158%). This year, barring July, which saw a normal rainfall with 19% surplus, both June and August witnessed poor rain, resulting in a deficit of 20% and 65%, respectively. September hasn’t reported any rainfall so far. The city last received rain on August 30.
According to IMD, out of four months of monsoon, July and August are the wettest months and altogether receive around 70% rainfall of the season, while June and September contribute around 15% each. IMD, however, is yet to announce the monsoon withdrawal.
“There are multiple factors, including the position of monsoon trough, formation of low pressure area and lack of western disturbance, which has resulted in a rain deficit in the region. Chances of any rainfall in the coming days are less, with only the possibility of light showers on September 9 and 10. Generally, the monsoon starts withdrawing from September 15. But in the last few years, it has been observed that monsoon withdrawal began in the last week of September,” said
Manmohan Singh, director, IMD (Chandigarh).
