Mumbai News Live Updates: Cyrus Mistry’s funeral was held at the Worli crematorium in Mumbai on Tuesday. Palghar police in Maharashtra have obtained the CCTV footage of the Mercedes car in which former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry was travelling to Mumbai, shortly before it crashed, killing him and his friend, an official said. The footage shows the car passing through the Dapchari check post in Palghar district at 2.21 pm on Sunday, he said. The car hit a road divider on a bridge over the Surya river on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway at around 3 pm, killing Mistry (54) and his friend Jahangir Pandole, who were on the back seats.

The preliminary autopsy of Mistry revealed that he sustained severe head trauma and multiple fractures in chest, head region, thigh and neck, in the accident near Mumbai on Sunday. This caused multiple injuries to vital organs, leading to his death. Along with viscera, his blood samples have been preserved for further analysis. Jehangir Pandole, who was seated on the back seat of the vehicle along with Mistry, also died after sustaining similar injuries.

Meanwhile, the highest noise levels during the immersion on the fifth day of the Ganesh festival were recorded at 115.6dB at the Babulnath Temple Corner, which is a few hundred meters from the Girgaum Chowpaty. The same was recorded at 112.1dB in Bandra, according to information from Sumaira Abdulali, from Awaaz foundation, a non-governmental not-for-profit organisation.

More than 48,000 idols immersed in Mumbai on 6th day of Ganesh festival

More than 48,000 idols of Lord Ganesh were immersed in the sea, ponds and artificial lakes in Mumbai on the sixth day of the Ganpati festival, a civic official said on Tuesday. The 10-day Ganesh festival commenced on August 31.

On the sixth day of the festivities on Monday, devotees immersed the idols of Lord Ganesh and Goddess Gauri in the sea at various beaches, ponds and artificial lakes made for the purpose.

Till early Tuesday morning, 48,029 idols were immersed, including 41,340 household idols, 429 sarvajanik (public) idols and 6,260 idols of Goddess Gauri, the official said, adding that no untoward incident was reported. (PTI)

Truck hits BJP MLA Nitesh Rane's car on Mumbai-Pune Expressway; none hurt

A truck hit a car in which Maharashtra BJP MLA Nitesh Rane and his family members were travelling on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, police said on Tuesday.

No one was injured in the accident which took place on Monday evening at Urse toll plaza on the expressway, they said.

Rane, the MLA from Kankavli in Sindhudurg district, and his family members were on way to Mumbai to offer prayers at the famous Lalbaugcha Raja Ganesh pandal. When their car stopped in lane no. 3 at the toll plaza around 6.30 pm, a truck hit their vehicle from the back side. The car's rear portion was damaged, an official from Shirgaon police station said. (PTI)

Ample material against Gautam Navlakha in Elgar case charge sheet, offence very serious: Spl NIA court while refusing him bail

There is ample material against activist Gautam Navlakha in the charge sheet filed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case and prima facie he is connected with the alleged offence, a special court here has said while denying him bail.

The offence is "very serious" in nature, special NIA court judge Rajesh J Katariya said on Monday while rejecting Navlakha's bail plea.

The order details was made available on Tuesday.

The case relates to alleged inflammatory speeches delivered at the Elgar Parishad conclave, held at Shaniwarwada in Pune on December 31, 2017, which police claimed triggered violence the next day near the Koregaon-Bhima war memorial located on the city's outskirts. (PTI)

Police obtain CCTV footage of Cyrus Mistry's car shortly before it crashed

Palghar police in Maharashtra have obtained the CCTV footage of the Mercedes car in which former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry was travelling to Mumbai, shortly before it crashed, killing him and his friend, an official said.

The footage shows the car passing through the Dapchari check post in Palghar district at 2.21 pm on Sunday, he said.

Another police officer said the person behind the wheel had covered a distance of 20 km in just nine minutes, meaning the luxury car was being driven at a speed of 180-190 km per hour.

The car was being driven by Mumbai-based gynaecologist Anahita Pandole (55), a family friend of Mistry, police have said. She and her husband Darius Pandole (60) were seriously injured in the accident and are undergoing treatment in a Mumbai hospital. (PTI)

Cyrus Mistry's funeral to be held at Worli crematorium

Former Tata sons chairman Cyrus Mistry's funeral will be held at the Worli Crematorium in Mumbai. Among the people seen arriving for the last rites was NCP MP Supriya Sule.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah with Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis and others, in Mumbai on Monday.

Even as Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde accompanied Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his visit to Lalbaugcha Raja, the CM’s inclusion in the visit was made at the last moment to ensure that it does not remain an ‘only BJP’ show.

Amid the widespread discontent among government teachers over being assigned increasing non-teaching duties outside school by government authorities, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that instructions have been given to the department to not engage teachers with such work.

The Sion Lake, which is a grade II-A heritage structure along with its premises, saw about 20-25 per cent fewer Ganesh Idol immersions after Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) requested devotees not to use the site for visarjan. BMC has planned rejuvenation of the lake and restoration of its premises, which is in the planning and design stage at present.
