COIMBATORE: Three men were arrested on Sunday evening for attempting to murder an employee of a private finance firm after kidnapping him from VOC Park Ground in Coimbatore at knifepoint.
The Race Course police identified the accused as S Sallu alias Salman Paris, 23, of Sugunapuram, B Akbar Sadiq, 26, of Madukkarai Market and M Mohammed Askar, 24, of Vincent Road at Kottaimedu in the city.
An investigation officer said the trio attempted to finish off P Sonaimuthu, 37, of Alanganallur in Madurai district over his friendship with Sallu’s wife.
Sonaimuthu befriended the woman when he was working as a loan manager with a private bank on the Avinashi Road a year ago. The woman was working as a sales executive with the bank.
“The woman got married to Sallu six months ago and converted to Islam. She also changed her name to Riya Fathima. While Sonaimuthu changed his job and joined a private finance firm as an area manager, he continued the friendship with Riya over the phone.”
When Sallu came to know about his wife’s friendship with Sonaimuthu, he contacted him over the phone and set up a meeting with him on Sunday. “Sallu, along with his two friends, met Sonaimuthu on VOC Park Ground around 3.30pm. Sallu questioned him for talking to his wife over the phone and financial transactions with her. Later, the trio assaulted Sonaimuthu, threatened him at knifepoint and kidnapped him in a car.”
The trio continued to assault Sonaimuthu with the knife in the moving car. “The car ran out of fuel and Sonaimuthu managed to escape when the vehicle reached near a petrol bunk at Athupalam in the city. He sought help from the public, forcing the trio to abandon the car and flee.”
Sonaimuthu was rushed to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital with bleeding injuries. Based on his complaint, assistant police commissioner (Kattoor range) R Vincent and team nabbed the trio within an hour. They were booked under sections 294 (b), 323, 324. 342, 365, 307 and 506(ii) of the Indian Penal Code and produced before a judicial magistrate court, who remanded them into judicial custody the same night.
The officer said Sonaimuthu was married and had a son. He was staying with his colleague at Sripathi Nagar near Ramanathapuram.
