Six-year-old dies, woman missing in Mankayam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a tragic incident, a six-year-old child died and one woman went missing after they got swept away in the flash floods in Idinjar stream at Brimore near Mankayam on Sunday evening. The child and the woman were part of a 10-member family from Nedumangadu who arrived on a picnic at Idinjar.
They were bathing in the stream in the evening when water gushed forth leading to a sudden surge in water levels. All the members who were in the stream were swept away in the current. Residents rushed to the spot and rescued seven of them.
The child and the woman could not be found initially. Later, Nazriya (6) was found around 1.5km downstream. Omana, a resident, said that the kid was slightly breathing when she was rescued. However, she was confirmed dead at the hospital. The search is on for the woman.
Vithura fire station received an alert from Palode police around 5.55pm. A 10-year-old child who was also washed away in the current was rescued and shifted to hospital.
