
Delhi news live updates (September 5): Rajpath and the Central Vista lawns in Delhi are expected to be renamed as ‘Kartavya Path’ (Path of Duty) soon, with the New Delhi Municipal Council calling a special meeting on Wednesday to discuss the change. According to NDMC Vice Chairperson and BJP leader Satish Upadhyay, the proposal for the change in name has not reached the council yet, but a meeting has been called. “We are convening a special meeting to discuss and rename the Central Vista and Rajpath stretch as Kartavya Path on September 7. The proposal is yet to come but the meeting has been called. All members and officials concerned will participate in the meeting,” he said.
Hours after Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia alleged that the Centre was mounting pressure to press for his arrest that a CBI officer committed suicide as a result, the CBI dubbed the allegations as “mischievous and misleading”. In a statement issued to the media, the agency said: “It is clarified that the gentleman officer Late Jitendra Kumar was in no way connected with the investigation of the case.” After BJP released a ‘sting video’ to claim that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia had taken “commissions” worth “hundreds of crores” to benefit private players under the now scrapped excise policy, Sisodia tore into the Centre, saying that they are mounting such pressure to press for his arrest that a CBI officer committed suicide as a result.

The two leaders are learnt to have discussed the current political situation in the country and ways to ensure Opposition unity. The Delhi Police on Monday said a preliminary investigation into the alleged suicide of a CBI officer, who was found hanging at his residence here, as well as the post-mortem report do not indicate any foul play.
Jitendra Kumar (48), posted as a deputy legal advisor at the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) Lodhi Road office here, was found hanging in his house at S-22, type-4 Hudco Place on September 1.
Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia alleged on Monday that Kumar ended his life because of pressure to frame him in a false excise case and demanded an "independent judicial" probe into his death. The federal agency dismissed the charge as "mischievous and misleading". (PTI)
The death of former chairman of Tata Sons Cyrus Mistry in a road accident near Palghar in Maharashtra has initiated a debate on road safety issues such as check on over-speeding, wearing of seat belts for rear passengers and inconsistent road designs.
Experts have pressed for the need to keep a check on speeding vehicles and making the use of seat belts for rear passengers mandatory. They have also stressed that roads in Delhi should have consistent designs to avoid any accidents.
"Inconsistency in road design can be spotted at a few stretches in the national capital which include Eastern and Western Peripheral expressways, Outer Ring Road, Ring Road among others. For example, at some points a six-lane road reduces into a four-lane stretch and uneven surfaces can also be witnessed at many locations. These issues pose a threat to driving and shall be done away with," Chief Scientist, Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), New Delhi, S Velmurugan said. (PTI)
A 52-year-old kingpin of an auto theft gang, who has allegedly been involved in the theft of over 5,000 cars across India, was arrested by the special staff of Central Delhi police on August 23. Police said they also found illegal firearms and ammunition in his possession.
According to police, the accused, Assam native Anil Chauhan, had previously been involved in 180 criminal cases including carrying illegal arms and rhino horn smuggling. Read more

A new consumer survey shows strong support from Delhi consumers for the proposed aggregator scheme of the city government which requires a time-bound transition to electric vehicles by last-mile delivery and e-commerce companies.
The proposed scheme sets an April 30, 2030 deadline for the complete transition of Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) to electric vehicles (EV) among e-commerce, delivery and transport logistics service providers.
Commissioned by the Sustainable Mobility Network and conducted by CMSR Consultants, the survey shows that 80 per cent of the 1,508 respondents in Delhi attributed last-mile delivery vehicles as one of the reasons for rising air pollution in the city. (PTI)
BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa has filed a police complaint against fact checker and co-founder of Alt News website Mohammed Zubair, accusing him of "spreading hate" against cricketer Arshdeep Singh and the Sikh community with his tweet.
The player became a victim of vicious trolling on social media after he dropped a catch during India's five-wicket loss to arch-rival Pakistan in the Super four match of the Asia Cup in Dubai on Sunday.

The real estate regulator for the national capital -- Delhi-RERA -- has registered DDA's 18 ongoing projects and has also imposed a penalty of Rs 1 lakh per project for delay in making applications of registration process, sources said on Monday. The regulator has also fined Rs 25 lakh each for 12 of the 18 projects for "delay in submitting documents," they said.
Delhi-RERA and DDA (Delhi Development Authority) have been at loggerheads for the last several months over the issue that whether the urban body was required to register their projects with the regulator.
"A fine of Rs 1 lakh per project has been imposed for delay in making applications of registration process of the 18 projects. In 12 of these projects, another fine of Rs 25 lakh each has been slapped for delay in submitting documents," an official source said. (PTI)
The Delhi Police Monday told the High Court that people can report on 112 or tag the traffic police @dtptraffic on Twitter if they find any unmanned barricades on roads in the national capital. The court had last month pulled up police for blocking the roads during rush hours.
The division bench of Justices Mukta Gupta and Anish Dayal said the liberty available to the public appears to be a welcome step to keep a check on the unmanned barricades. However, the court enquired about the decision to allow residential welfare associations to put barricades inside the colonies where there are no gates and asked whether any pilot study has been done. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is scheduled to meet CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury and CPI leader D Raja in Delhi on Tuesday. The Janata Dal (United) leader arrived in the national capital on Monday.
Kumar, who snapped ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) last month, on Sunday said his only goal is to work for uniting the Opposition to unseat the saffron party from power at the Centre.
Kumar's visit to Delhi comes amidst the buzz within the JD(U) that he may emerge as the Opposition's prime ministerial face in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. (PTI)

Delhi reeled under hot and humid weather conditions on Monday with the maximum temperature settling at 37.1 degrees Celsius, three notches above the season's average. The minimum temperature was recorded at 26.2 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year.
The humidity levels oscillated between 42 per cent and 77 per cent. The weatherman has forecast partly cloudy sky on Tuesday with the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to settle around 37 and 26 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Sunday's maximum temperature had settled at 36.9 degrees Celsius, three notches above the season's average, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 26.8 degrees Celsius, a notch above the season's average. (PTI)
A four-kg giant mesenteric tumour was successfully removed from the stomach of a 32-year-old woman via laparoscopic surgery at a private hospital here, a statement said on Monday.
The patient, who hails from Nepal, had visited the C K Birla hospital in Delhi with complaints of extreme pain and an over-sized stomach. Upon further evaluation, it was diagnosed that she had a giant 4 kg and 40 centimetres long tumour in her stomach.
The surgery to remove the giant tumour was performed using a keyhole laparoscopy technique and the tumour was extracted via a pfannenstiel incision, which is usually made during a caesarean section for delivery of the baby. The procedure resulted in no scarring on the abdomen and ensured minimal pain to the patient. (PTI)
Contact tracing and surveillance of monkeypox patients in Delhi has proved to be a challenging task for chief district medical officers and doctors, who have cited issues such as a language barrier and resistance from patients.
A total of six cases of the viral disease have been reported so far in the city, of which five patients were of African origin. While the five have been discharged from Lok Nayak Hospital – the nodal hospital for the disease – the latest patient, a 21-year-old woman, was admitted to the hospital last Friday and her test report came positive for the disease on Saturday. Four days after the former vice-chairman of Sohna market committee was shot dead at a garment showroom in Gurgaon’s Sadar Bazar, police Monday said they had arrested one of the shooters in the case.
Sukbir Singh (48) alias Sukhbir Chairman, a property dealer hailing from Rithoj village, had gone to purchase clothes from a showroom in Sadar Bazar on September 1 around 3.30 pm, when at least five assailants had opened fire at him. He was rushed to a private hospital, where he had succumbed to injuries.
In the police complaint, his son, Anurag, said his father had been active in politics from Sohna region and had been former vice-chairman of Sohna market committee. Read more
The Delhi High Court has asked the authorities to ensure strict compliance with the applicable rules while transporting camels for the purpose of their participation in the Republic Day Parade while cautioning that any deviation shall be viewed seriously by it.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma disposed of a petition alleging illegal transportation of camels from Rajasthan for the Republic Day event while noting that all care and precaution was taken as well as relevant statutory provisions were being followed by the authorities and thus no further orders were required to be passed.
“It is made clear that the respondents shall ensure strict compliance of the amendment to Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (The Transport of Animals) Rules, 2020 while transporting the camels in future also for the purpose of their participation in Republic Day Parade, or any other purpose also. In case of transporting camels, the respondents shall also ensure that the statutory provisions as contained in the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 are not violated,” said the bench also comprising Justice Subramonium Prasad in its order dated September 2. The Delhi Police has arrested two key members of an interstate drug cartel and seized 4.2 kg of heroin from them, officials said on Monday. The kingpin of the cartel, Trilok Chand (51), and his carrier Lal Chand (29) supplied heroin in Delhi NCR and adjoining states for many years, they said.
According to the police, Chand used to prepare heroin in his village in Madhya Pradesh's Mandsaur. The cartel allegedly supplied more than 100 kg of heroin in Delhi in the past two years, they said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Jasmeet Singh said the police received information on August 28 that the two members of the cartel would deliver a big consignment to one of their contacts near Sarai Kale Khan ISBT between 6 pm and 7 pm. (PTI)
In the wake of former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry's death in a car crash, Delhi Police took to Twitter to urge citizens not to over-speed and always wear seatbelts.
The police also shared a photo on how to ensure safety during a road accident, advising drivers and passengers to buckle up and open airbags in emergencies.
"Don't go fast. Fasten your seat belt. Doesn't matter where you are sitting, front seats or back seats. Wear seat belts. Buckle up every single time!" Delhi Police tweeted with the hashtag Road Safety and Delhi Police Cares. (PTI)
Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena sent a legal notice to AAP leaders on Monday over their "false and derogatory" charges against him for his alleged involvement in a Rs 1,400 crore "scam" during his tenure as the KVIC chairman.
The notice served on Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Atishi, Durgesh Pathak, Saurabh Bharadwaj, Sanjay Singh and Jasmine Shah, among others, asks them to issue a press release "directing all members of the party and all persons associated with it, whether directly or indirectly, to cease and desist from spreading and circulating false, defamatory, malicious and unsubstantiated statements".
The legal notice also asks the AAP leaders to comply with the requisitions within 48 hours of its receipt. (PTI)
The Delhi High Court was informed on Monday by the Delhi Police that no unmanned barricades will be left on roads and people can report any unattended barricade at helpline number, 112 or tag police on Twitter and action will be immediately taken.
The high court termed it a “welcome step” and said with this social media step, a check can be kept on unmanned barricades.
A bench of Justices Mukta Gupta and Anish Dayal was also informed by the Delhi police counsel that as per new guidelines issued by the police, no barricades will be put on roads during peak hours unless there is specific input or information regarding law and order or crime detection under the order of a senior officer of Deputy Commissioner of Police rank.
