NOIDA: The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) has proposed to establish a semiconductor and electronic manufacturing cluster on 1,000 acres of land in Sector 10. While the semiconductor cluster will be developed on 700 acres, EMC will be set up on 300 acres of land. For this, land will be acquired where domestic and foreign companies can invest.
Officials said this project would not only bring investment but will also provide huge employment opportunities. Many international companies, including that of Taiwan, have expressed their interest in setting up their units in the area. An investment to the tune of Rs 1 lakh crore is expected to be made, while the Authority estimated that over 65,000 people would get jobs in the process.
YEIDA plans to launch the scheme by the end of this financial year. At present, semiconductors, which are used in cars, mobile phones and laptops among other electronic products, are being manufactured at a small scale India and they are mainly imported from Taiwan and China and assembled in the country.
CEO Arun Vir Singh said, "The country is still dependent on China and Taiwan for semiconductors. Once the cluster is developed, they will get tough competition."
Singh said a proposal in this regard has been sent to the state government and acquisition of land will soon start for the development of the cluster.
The possibility of setting up such units in Gautam Budh Nagar is being explored for some time. Recently, a delegation from Taiwan accompanied by senior state government officials visited Greater Noida to set up a semiconductor unit.
Officials said the Integrated Industrial Township in Greater Noida might be suitable for setting up units, but the cluster would come up under the YEIDA area.
Officials said the country had faced a shortage of semiconductors in the country during the Covid pandemic due to the curbs on imports, affecting vehicle and mobile productions. The semiconductor and electronic manufacturing cluster will help in overcoming this issue.
