MANGALURU: A cluster of organisations has launched a postcard campaign to draw the attention of Prime Minister
Narendra Modi towards the longstanding demand of including Tulu in Schedule 8 of the Constitution. Tuluver Kudla, in association with various other organisations, plans to send 1 lakh postcards to Modi, seeking constitutional recognition for Tulu.
The campaign got momentum after a visit by Modi, who did not make any mention of the demand of the people of Tulunadu regarding their language in his speech.
Campaign coordinator Naveen Shetty Edmemar said the campaign launched at Banjarumale, a border village of Dakshina Kannada, will emphasise the need for recognition of the language.
"Several organisations in the past have raised their voices seeking constitutional recognition for Tulu. However, there is no response from the government. Hence, we have decided that the issue should be brought to the notice of the Prime Minister through this campaign of sending postcards. People of the coastal districts who speak Tulu have been requested to send postcards to the Prime Minister with an appeal to consider our demand," he said, adding that the campaign has received a good response from people.
The campaign has nothing to do with politics, Pratheek Poojari, president of Tuluver Kudla, said. "It is an apolitical campaign for the recognition of Tulu. People from political parties, religious and social leaders, organisations and institutions have been requested to take part."
Various Tulu organisations like Jai Tulunadu, Tulunadu Okkoota, Yuva Tulunadu, Tulupedia, Tulu Nirmana Sene, Tuluvas Council and others have raised this demand earlier.
