
Teachers’ Day in India, September 5, 2022; National Awards To Teachers by President Murmu: President Droupadi Murmu honoured 45 selected teachers from across the country with National Awards at Vigyan Bhawan New Delhi. Following this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with the winners at his office at 4:30 pm.
Today, India is celebrating its 50th National Teachers’ Day. The day is celebrated on September 5 every year which is the birth anniversary of India’s second President Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was also a scholar, philosopher, and Bharat Ratna awardee.
The National Awards to Teachers are meant to celebrate the unique initiatives and contributions of some of the finest teachers choosen from across the country. These teachers through their commitment have not only improved the quality of school education but have also enriched the lives of their students. The event is being organised by the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with the winners of National Awards to Teachers, 2022 at the Prime Minister’s office at 4:30 pm on September 5, on the occasion of Teachers’ Day.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) will be announcing several research schemes which will benefit higher educational institutions across the country on the occasion of Teachers’ day. Leading by example, Ms. G. Ponsankari of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Tumakuru, Karnataka joined hands with various NGOs to build eco-friendly components for the school, develop local health traditions, encourage a plastic free campus, ensuring peer learning, optimising the use of Atal Tinkering Lab, conducting effective Alumni meets, project-based learning for her students.
A teacher at the Artchouna Soupraya Naikar Government High School Mudaliarpet, Puducherry, Aravindaraja D has put his small school on the international map by the way of innovative programmes such as the bubble show, creation of science corner, the eco club, use of Foldscope project microscopy, establishing a photography centre, etc… His students have won the International Astronomical Union award from among 128 countries. His love for science not only inspire his students but also the whole community.
Amit Kumar, a computer teacher at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya at Theog Himachal Pradesh has made Mathematics and Science a fun learning experience for students. He has adopted a blended learning approach using his computer education. He introduced Collaborative Flipped learning in the classroom to implement Communication, Critical Thinking, Creativity, Curation and Collaboration to empower students and teachers with 21st Century skills he made science learning an all-round experience. Amit’s innovative approaches includes creation of Mind Maps by students, Skype interaction of students with classrooms across various countries, collaborative learning using Wakelet and student voice empowerment for better engagement using Flipgrid are plane changing experiences.
Ahead of Teachers’ Day, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia met some Delhi government school heads Sunday to discuss plans for schools. The Delhi government will be conferring State Teachers Awards for different categories on Monday. Ahead of that, Sisodia met with some school heads. According to his office, in the meeting, he tried to motivate them to innovate in developing better school environments, sharing practices with other schools, and establishing better relations between the school and the community. Mr. Khursheed Ahmad is a science teacher at Composite School, Sahawa in Uttar Pradesh. Popularizing science by impactful teaching is the heart of Ahmad’s teaching philosophy. Simple innovations in pedagogy such as using the elements of the periodic table as roll numbers of students to make it easy for them to remember are simple but proved to be effective. With the limited resources he made science models such as the heart, human circulatory system etc. with recycled material and made students do experiments such as chromatography.
'My school has children coming from 18 villages. I conduct village chaupals so that the community is involved in and discusses questions of education. My effort is to make science easy and accessible to them. My students participate in various competitions and this year, 26 students from my school have got national scholarships,' Ahmad shared with The Indian Express
TN Sridhar is a teacher at Zila Parishad High School, Yenmangandla village in Telangana. While talking to The Indian Express, he shared, “As a science teacher, I have established a low-cost concept lab in the school and organised experiments online for the students throughout the pandemic. I want to inspire children to become scientists so I have set up a "Kalam Dreamforce Academy" in my own house. It is a space for children to come after school hours or on vacations to do all kinds of experiments and to explore science, the facilities are there.”

Buddhadev Datta, a primary school teacher at Joypur Primary School in West Bengal is an exemplary innovator in school education. Notwithstanding the rural setting of his school, he went on to innovate pedagogical methods that get the students interested and involved. Breaking the monotony, he made the students ask questions and he as a teacher answered them and this has helped immensely in inculcating critical thinking in students.
“Normally, the idea is that the teacher asks a question and students give answers. But my model is to give an answer and each child should ask questions based in that. For example, I say the answer is Rabindranath Tagore. The children then ask questions like who wrote the national anthems of two countries, and who wrote the Gitanjali. They need critical thinking to be able to tackle that,” he shared.
Nishi Kumari as a teacher of the Mahadev Higher Secondary School Patna. A state level active career counsellor, she has been involved in programs such as awareness about child rights, child marriage, dowry, menstrual hygiene, creating pollution-free environment, waste management etc. in collaboration with other organizations. She motivated her students to think rationally, implemented learner-centered pedagogy in classrooms, and created a culture of creativity and innovation.
“I have worked to tackle menstrual hygiene issues and period taboos for my girl students. I got a sanitary pad vending machine donated to the school and now I'm trying to get a disposal pit donated. My focus is on donation as that requires social awareness,” she told The Indian Express
Mimi Yhoshii, Head Teacher at GMS, Officers Hill, Kohima transformed her school campus by building extra classrooms, beautifying the campus, school meal programme, develop a kitchen garden and that lead to the inevitable increase in the enrolment. 80% of her students are domestic helpers and hence, she conducts classes for them after school hours to reduce drop-out rate. Particularly fascinating are her innovative teaching learning methods and helping children to learn vocations.
'My school had a shortage of classrooms but with stakeholders, we raised funds by making food packs with cake and fruits. Governor PB Acharya was motivated by our efforts and donated funds with which we made two ‘kacha’ classrooms in 2018. In 2021, with more support, we were able to make these ‘pakka’ classrooms. We have only 5 classrooms from the government's side but there are 5 other rooms that members of the community let us use when we need them for classes and activities,' she told The Indian Express
Having worked as an administrator in a school, Gamchi Timre R Marak noticed the challenges faced by the children in the mining areas of Meghalaya and decided to start her own school -- Educere Higher Secondary School, Samanda, in East Garo Hills-- with the local support and a few similar-minded teachers. She took to counselling, introducing innovative teaching programmes so that these children could be drawn out of the rampant alcoholism, domestic violence and early marriages.
Durga Ram Muwal has proved himself to be a dedicated and motivated teacher who has worked hard to improve the performance of his school -- Government Upper Primary School Pargiyapada, Rajasthan. The school caters to the most deprived sections of society. The introduction of yoga training and self-defence training have made him a popular face in the community. He has been successfully curtailing dropouts by engaging students through the use of joyful teaching learning materials, experiential pedagogical practices and co-scholastic activities. His efforts have given a voice to the girl child.
Concluding her remarks, President said, "On this occasion, I would like to thank my teachers who not only taught me but also gave me a lot of love and affection and inspired me to work hard. Thanks to the guidance provided by my parents and teachers, I became the first girl of my village to go to college."
Anju Dahiya is a teacher at Government Senior Secondary School, Barwasni, Sonipat, Haryana. She has been awarded for designing innovative methods to kindle the curiosity of her students. She has introduced science congress, conclaves, quizzes and in order to develop personalities of her students in a holistic manner, she has initiated many activities such as mountaineering, planting of trees and the use of QR codes. Ms. Anju took the help of NGOs and philanthropists for updating the infrastructure of the school.
In her speech, President Murmu encourages teachers to teach children in their mother tongues, saying it is the best way to nurture their talents.
Addressing the award ceremony, President Murmu said, "I am happy to see that the teachers who have won this award are from all corners of the country of whom one is differently abled and 18 are women. I am thankful to my teachers who not only taught me but gave me love and gave me the inspiration to strive."
Arun Kumar Garg, 39, is the principal of a government model school in the Datewas village of the Mansa district in Punjab. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Garg started a YouTube channel called “Abhyaas by Arun sir” to deliver free Mathematics lessons in Punjabi. The channel currently has more than 11k subscribers. Apart from YouTube, he has also delivered 163 lectures on DD Punjabi, the NCERT’s Swayam and e-Vidya portals during the period to make the subject easy for students.
