NEW DELHI: After being shot multiple times and battling for life for over 10 days, hotelier and realtor Amit Gupta succumbed to his injuries on Sunday. Though the crime committed in north Delhi was caught on CCTV, Delhi Police hasn't made any progress in the case so far. The Gogi gang is suspected to be behind the shootout.
Police have also failed to catch the shooters in the Mundka double murder, which was a case of mistaken identity. The same gang is suspected to be involved in the realtor's shooting and both incidents occurred within a few hours.
DCP (North) Sagar Singh Kalsi confirmed the development and said Gupta succumbed to his injuries and IPC Section 302 (murder) was added to the FIR. "We have formed 10 teams, including four SHOs, and they are conducting interstate raids," he added. Asked if a special investigation team (SIT) was formed, he replied in the negative, but said they had added more cops in various teams probing the case.
Sources said a probe revealed that the shooters were from Haryana. "We suspect that apart from the two shooters, few more criminals were at the spot," said a source. Police suspect that two accused shot the victim, while the others were on the lookout. It was also revealed that the shooters reached the spot 15 minutes before the incident.
A few people were detained to know whether they helped the accused in escaping. Sources said Gupta's phone may hold crucial information and would be forensically examined for leads. His call records were also being analysed for clues. His links with some policemen, including a few senior officers, were also being examined.
On August 23, Gupta was shot in his abdomen and leg just after he got off his white-coloured SUV at Labour Chowk in Burari. Two men standing there approached him and started firing. He tried to save himself, but was chased and shot. With a bullet still stuck in his body, Gupta was shifted to a private hospital for treatment.
Investigators claimed that over half a dozen bullets were fired by the accused, who fled after the incident. Seven empty shells of 7x64mm were found at the spot. CCTV footage showed the two killers running away from the spot. One of them was also seen carrying a pistol in his hand. Gupta was provided with security after Special Cell was apprised about the threat on him from the Gogi gang.
