Mumbai: 4-year-old boy run over by BEST bus, dies in hospital

MUMBAI: A four-year-old boy, Abrar, died after he was run over by a speeding BEST bus in Powai on Thursday, the police said.
The incident was witnessed by the boy's aunts, Alisha Khan and Afreen Khan, with whom he had gone to a garden around 5.30 pm. BEST bus driver Sandeep Shinde (33) was arrested on Friday after the boy's father Tahir Khan (36) lodged a complaint. The boy was the only child of his parents who who resided at Vikhroli Parksite.
"BEST has carried out an internal inquiry after the incident. The driver, Shinde, was arrested after the incident. He surrendered before the police. He said the boy suddenly ran on the road and was hit by his bus before he could apply the brakes," said an officer from Powai police station.
The incident occurred at around 6.45 pm when Abrar had gone with his aunt and was walking back home. In the complaint, Tahir Khan said: "I was at my workplace in Dadar, when I received calls from my cousins asking me to rush to hospital as my son had met with an accident. They said the speeding bus, after hitting my son, ran over his stomach. He succumbed three hours later while undergoing treatment at a Powai hospital."
Shinde has been booked under the Indian Penal Code sections for rash and negligent driving. He was later released on bail.
