MYSURU: In a setback for the JD(S) which was eyeing the mayor's post with the support of BJP, the saffron party has decided to field candidates for both mayor and the deputy mayor's posts. BJP has also decided against joining hands with JD(S).
A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the party district unit leaders, MLAs, corporators, and leaders led by state BJP vice president Nirmal Kumar Surana.
"Our party will not join hands with JD(S) in the mayoral elections. We have 27 members, and we will win both the posts," Surana told STOI. The meeting decided to let the party leaders decide the candidates for the elections.
Congress to fight mayoral polls independently
Congress has decided to fight the mayoral polls independently and field candidates for both mayor and deputy mayor posts.
A decision in this regard was taken in a meeting chaired by KPCC working president R Dhruvanarayana in the city on Saturday.
"We have issued a whip to all the corporators and asked them to stay united," said Dhruvanarayana after the meeting.
He made it clear that there is no question of any alliance with JD(S). "It was JD(S) which broke the alliance last year," he charged. "We will announce our candidates on September 5," he said.
Meanwhile, JD(S) raised objection to including MLC Dinesh Guligowda, who is elected from the neighbouring Mandya district, from the local authorities segment in the Mysuru City Corporation mayor-deputy mayor election voter list.
A delegation led by the party's state spokesperson R Ravichandragowda raised an objection against the move.
