Kanpur: A young couple allegedly committed suicide on Saturday morning by jumping in front of a train in Banda's Nagnedhi village under Atarra police area following opposition by their parents to their love affair.
The incident came to light when the driver of the Jabalpur-Lucknow bound Chitrakoot Express spotted the bodies of the two near pole no. 1341 of Manikpur railway line passing near Nagnedhi village of Atarra police station and informed the Khurhand railway station authorities. Meanwhile, villagers had also reached the spot.
On receiving information about the couple committing suicide, superintendent of police (SP) Abhinandan, additional superintendent of police (ASP) Laxmi Niwas Mishra along with the local police reached the spot and supervised the investigations.
Police identified the deceased couple as
Ashok (22) and
Puja (18) (name changed) hailing from Girwa area of the district.
“On coming to know about their love affair, their parents opposed their relationship. It also came to fore that recently the family members of the girl had engaged her with a boy hailing from Chhatarpur district of
Madhya Pradesh,” the police said and added, “The couple on late Friday night escaped from their homes. Thereafter, on Saturday morning, they reached the Nagnedhi village and jumped in front of a train. The two suffered grievous injuries and died at the spot”.
Police informed their family members before shifting the bodies to the mortuary.
Inspector Kotwali Anoop Dubey said that the bodies of the lovers have been dispatched to the district hospital for post-mortem examination. “Further investigations are underway. We are trying to question the family members of both to ascertain the exact cause which forced them to resort to the extreme step,” Dubey said.
