Rajkot: Bhavnagar police arrested a man and a woman from Mumbai for cheating a local diamond trader by deceptively replacing diamonds worth Rs 58 lakh with duplicate ones.
They had won the trust of the trader by convincing him that they would buy diamonds in a huge quantity and pay him Rs 83 lakh for the gems worth of Rs 58 lakh.
The accused were identified as Rupesh Chavan (33) and Shweta Yadav (24. They had approached Darshak Ghevariya through an agent on August 17 but he had refused to meet them as it was market closing time.
Chavan again approached Ghevariya on August 22 and identified himself as a diamond trader from Mumbai. He was accompanied by an agent and finalized the price at Rs 32,000 per carat for polished diamonds.
The next day, Ghevariya was called to a hotel where Chavan introduced him to Yadav. Yadav told Ghevariya that they both wanted to buy 500 carat polished diamonds. The visited his unit and selected four packets.
As per the standard practice, Ghevariya went inside a nearby building to get these diamonds tested, sealed the packers and handed them to the couple who were sitting in their car. But Yadav insisted that Ghevariya reopen the packets and show them the content, which he did and again sealed the packets.
Chavan then put these packets in a plastic box and gave it to Ghevariya and told him that they would make the payment through an angadia within two days and take the delivery. But when Ghevariya did not get the payment after two days and Shweta did not give any satisfactory answer over the phone, he opened the sealed packets and found duplicate diamonds inside the packets.
Police said the couple clandestinely exchanged the packets and put similar seal on them while keeping Ghevariya busy in talks.
The complaint had been lodged at Neelam Bagh police station.
