Kanpur: Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board in its report sent to the board headquarters has recommended to impose a fine of Rs 90 lakh on Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC) for discharging sewer and industrial waste directly into
Ganga and Pandu river through nullahs.
According to UP Pollution Control Board’s regional office, the board had monitored Rani ghat nullah, Sheetala Bazar, Budhia Ghat, ICICI nullah in Ratanpur for three months and then recommended a fine. The UPPCB claimed that more than 10 crore litre of industrial waste and sewage water is being discharged into Ganga. On the other hand, as the claim made by the KMC, it used to spend Rs 5 crore every year in bio-remediation but the fact is that no bio- remediation is taking place. Acting on the information,
Amit Mishra of regional pollution control board, had monitored the nullahs and ghats and after he got confirmed sent a show cause notice to the KMC. KMC claimed that during monsoon it used to stop the bio- remediation process after which the matter was placed before the National Green Tribunal (NGT) which said that stopping the bio remediation was wrong.
Amit Mishra then sent a letter to the state board’s headquarters and recommended imposition of fine of Rs 90 lakh.
