MYSURU: Ahead of the rehearsal of cannon shots in the run up to Dasara celebrations, City Armed Reserve personnel conducted a dry run at the Mysuru palace premises on Saturday.
A team of 30 personnel will be engaged in firing high-decibel cannon shots which is an USP of the celebration. Cannons will be fired during the Dasara procession when 21 gun salute is offered to the goddess Chamundeshwari at the Mysuru palace. They are also used during Torchlight Parade, which marks the culmination of the festival, at Banni Mantap Parade Grounds in north Mysuru.
The exercise is a risky affair as gunpowder is used in large quantities in the cannons, which are one-and-half centuries old. In all, seven cannons are used to perform the task of firing 21 shots which is a tradition for decades.
Elephants and horses that are used in procession too will be acclimatised with the cannon shots.
