Guwahati: Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has backed ace sports personalities from the state, Lovlina Borgohain and Hima Das, who could not win medals at the Commonwealth Games despite high expectations from their fans. Sarma said the state needs many more Hima and Lovlina, who can bring laurels to the state in the future.
“Pressurising the champions to repeat their best performance every time is unfair. We should target to produce a hundred Himas and another hundred Lovlinas in the future,” Sarma said at a government ceremony where Commonwealth Games gold medalist Nayanmoni Saikia was formally inducted into Assam Police as a deputy superintendent of police. Nayanmoni was awarded for clinching gold in lawn bowl.
“Winning medals in Olympics, Asian Games or Commonwealth Games are rare moments of life. Such victories cannot be repeated every time. It’s not humanly possible. People will cherish those winning moments, which will inspire future generations to shine in the sports,” Sarma added. He said building extra pressure on the sports personalities to repeatedly win medals in world stage may discourage youngsters from taking up sports as careers.
While the state celebrated victory of Nayanmoni and many lauded the state government’s move to appoint the star performers in government jobs, Sarma said focus should be on younger players who will start plying lawn ball in the years to come.
“After conquering Mount Everest one may not find another higher peak to climb,” Sarma said on the expectations from the star performers.
