Purnima Das Verma was born on March 2, 1934 as Meherbhano Mohammad Ali. Her mother was muslim from Lucknow and father, Ram Sheshadri Ayangar, was a Tamil brahmin who was an accountant with a film director and producer, Kikubhai Desai. Purnima had four sisters and one brother. Her screen name was suggested by one of her sisters, Shirin, who was an actress, married to a film director Nanabhai Bhatt. Purnima was hardly sixteen years old when she debuted in two movies, 'Manager' and 'Tum Aur Main' in 1947 and later became one of the most popular actress in Hindi movies from the late 40s to 50s. She acted in more than two hundred movies. Her neighbour and filmmaker Raman B Desai offered to cast her as Radha in his movie 'Radheshyam' (1948). She played the second lead alongside Bharat Bhushan and Shashikala in 'Thes' (1949). Purnima appeared in many movies, including 'Patanga' (1949), 'Jogan' (1950), 'Sagai' (1951), 'Jaal' (1952), 'Aurat' (1953) and 'Pooja' (1954). Purnima married journalist Syed Shauqat Hashmi with whom she had a son, Anwar Hashmi (Emraan Hashmi’s father). Hashmi moved to Pakistan during the partition while Purnima stayed back. In 1954, Purnima married for the second time to filmmaker Bhagwan Das Varma, a famous producer-director of his time.Purnima took a break from the film industry only to return after three years in 'Chamak Chandni' (1957) to help with finances at home. Soon she started doing character roles in movies such as 'Humjoli' (1970), 'Zanjeer' (1973) and more. She was seen in Ajay Devgan's 'Phool Aur Kaante' and 'Naam'. 'Sadaa Suhangan' (1986) was her last movie. Purnima breathed her last on August 14, 2013. During the last few years of her life, she suffered from Alzheimer's disease.
