Prayagraj: Gone are the days when the train passengers used to look for cabin quarters on the outer of a railway station to find out the approaching station. As a part of its modernisation drive, the Indian Railways has removed all such cabins which were primarily responsible for manual control of the interlocking system of tracks as electronic interlocking (EI) has been introduced instead. Of the total of around 7,000 stations, just 154 are left where the EI-based system is to be installed.
Officials said cabins were used to shift track and control the signals of a station. But, after taking up modernisation drive, Railways has removed almost all the cabins across the country as the manual control of interlocking system has been taken over by mechanised signalling system based on EI.
