Colva: Maina-Curtorim police have arrested three persons, including two bull owners for organising ‘dhirios’ in the village.
Police inspector Mohan Gaude said that former Curtorim sarpanch Rui Menezes and Cedric Fernandes are bull owners and had organised the fights, while Mathew Fernandes was arrested for placing bets on the fights.
Gaude said that the animals were sent to a veterinary hospital for examination, while the accused were released on bail.
Dhirios were banned by the Bombay high court in 1996 for violation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960.
Section 11 of the act prohibits “inciting any animal to fight any other animal with a view to providing entertainment” or other purposes.
