DIBRUGARH: A woman doctor from Dibrugarh was on Thursday duped of Rs 1.5 lakh by a cyber fraudster who introduced himself as an Army officer, seeking an appointment for a medical check-up of his soldiers.
In a pattern similar to other such cybercrimes, the accused made the victim click some links sent to her mobile phone saying that it would help him make the payment in advance, following which Rs 1.5 lakh was immediately debited from her account.
The matter came to light when Shilpika Chutia, a dental surgeon, and her husband, Santanu Bora, a psychiatrist at Assam Medical College and Hospital lodged an FIR with the Dibrugarh police station later in the evening.
Shilpika, who runs a dental clinic at Boiragimoth in Dibrugarh town, on Friday said the accused called her to her chamber saying he was an Army officer from the Mohanbari camp in Dibrugarh and that he wanted her to do a check-up of 35 of his jawans.
The accused even made a video call to the doctor dressed in Army fatigue and insisted on paying in advance for the check-up. When she agreed to do so, he sent her some links on her mobile phone. When she clicked on those, a whopping Rs 1.5 lakh was deducted from her bank account in four installments of Rs 50,000, Rs 40,000, Rs 50,000 and Rs 10,000, respectively, within a minute.
Shilpika said, “I hope Assam Police will help me in recovering the amount.”
