Coimbatore: A construction worker was arrested on Wednesday for attempting to murder his youngest son over a family dispute at MGR Nagar, Kovaipudur, on Tuesday night. The assault victim is battling for life at the intensive care unit of Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).
The Kuniyamuthur police identified the accused as R Rajendran, 55, of MGR Nagar. A police officer said Rajendran was married to R Shanthi, 42, a homemaker, with two sons.
“His youngest son R Sukumar, 28, is an alcoholic. Around 11.30pm on Tuesday, Rajendran confronted his son and asked him to quit drinking. The two then entered into an altercation and in a fit of rage Rajendran assaulted his son with an iron rod,” the officer said.
Sukumar, the officer said, sustained severe injuries to his face and head. Other family members immediately rushed him to CMCH, where his condition was said to be critical.
A BCom holder, Sukumar was working with a private company at Kulathupalayam Pirivu.
Shanthi, meanwhile, lodged a complaint with Kuniyamuthur police inspector K Satheesh, who registered a case against Rajendran under sections 294 (b), 324 and 307 of the Indian Penal Code on Wednesday.
