THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The assembly, on Thursday, unanimously passed a bill cancelling the state government decision to hand over all the appointments in Waqf board to the public service commission (PSC).
Opposition leader VD Satheesan said UDF had earlier taken a stand against handing over the appointments to PSC and it welcomed the government’s new move. Minister in charge of Waqf V Abdurahiman said that the government decided to withdraw its earlier decision based on the discussions held with various Muslim organizations.
But, the opposition leader said that the government’s version that the decision was withdrawn only on the basis of discussions with Muslim organizations were untrue and that the opposition had strongly opposed the government’s earlier decision which was recorded in the assembly. Though IUML leader N Shamsudheen tried to bring a private member’s bill to cancel the decision to hand over the appointments to PSC, the bill could not be moved.
On Wednesday, the cabinet had ratified the bill to cancel the old decision. The government had backtracked from its earlier decision and the announcement in this regard was made by the chief minister in the assembly on July 20 during the previous session.
