Sarpanch: Need to generate funds for devpt of Calangute

Calangute: The new Calangute panchayat will focus on generating funds through taxes over the next few months, sarpanch Joseph Sequeira said.
Sequeira told reporters that the panchayat had around Rs16 crore funds when he was sarpanch in 2017 but most of the money has been spent and the panchayat now has around Rs 2 crore in its kitty.
He said that most of these funds will be spent on clearing pending bills and other regular expenses, and that the panchayat will not be able to undertake any major new development works at least in the next six months.
“I was surprised that only Rs2 crore is left even though there was a lot of income in the last five years. How are we to do development? After the funds are generated then we will take up development,” the new Calangute sarpanch said. Sequeira has not been a panchayat member in the last five years.
