CUDDALORE: Police arrested a jail warden in Cuddalore Central Prison and a Chennai-based lawyer on Friday on charges of attempting to murder an assistant jailor in the same prison and his family members by throwing petrol bombs at his house.
Police said two people hurled petrol bombs at the house of assistant jailor Manikandan on August 28. The Cuddalore old town police registered a case under sections 436 and 307 of the Indian Penal Code after his wife lodged a complaint.
Police formed special teams and checked the CCTV footage collected from near the assistant jailor's house. They also analysed the call records of suspected staff members in the prison.
Investigations revealed that jail warden Senthilkumar had repeatedly called specific mobile numbers in Chennai and Trichy. The members of the special teams picked up the jail warden for inquiries. The warden confessed to committing the crime. He said the assistant jailor had issued him a punishment memo for extending illegal help to a rowdy, identified as Ennore Dhanasekar, lodged in the prison.
The warden said he had decided to take revenge on the assistant jailor by murdering him and his family members.
He received the contact numbers of the rowdy's aides in Chennai and Trichy and took the two men deputed by them to identify the assistant jailor's house. The two men hurled petrol bombs at the house to murder the assistant jailor and his family members.
Based on his confessional statement, the police arrested M Dinesh, 23, a lawyer in Chennai.
Special teams launched efforts to nab the others involved in the crime.
