GUWAHATI: A delay in declaration of under-graduate sixth or final semester results may compel many students of Gauhati University (GU), who are attending regular classes at the post-graduate (PG) level from August 16, to vacate their seats if they fail to clear the test.
The students joined classes in masters programmes last month based only on the PG entrance test results.
“The declaration of results has been delayed because of Covid-19. But the university was not in a position to postpone the PG admissions beyond August,” a senior official of GU said.
At the PG level, around 2,000 students have been enrolled this year. In traditional subjects, while 80% of the seats were reserved for GU students, 20% were earmarked for aspirants from other universities. Seats were open in interdisciplinary subjects.
GU officials said the students, who will fail to clear the final semester undergraduate exams, will have to vacate the seats as the admission was provisional.
Post Graduate Students’ Union president Hemen Kalita said, “It’s unfortunate if someone has to vacate seats even after joining PG classes. In the upcoming sessions, admission should be held after announcement results.”
PGSU said from next year, pre-Covid norms should return. “Considerable weightage should come from undergraduate exams and the rest from the entrance,” he said. The students who got admission in PG this year just need to pass the final semester exams to continue their studies.
