Mangaluru: Mangalore University, which is grappling with permanent faculty with the ability to be PhD guides, has roped in guides from private institutions.
The MU, which has not been able to fill vacant permanent teaching posts for several years, is facing an issue in allocating PhD guides to fresh candidates applying for the degree. Several post-graduate departments at the Mangalagangothri campus have been run by guest faculty as there has been no regular recruitment yet.
P S Yadapadithaya, vice-chancellor, MU, said that recently a PhD notification for journalism was issued. The department had not admitted candidates for PhD degrees for the past three years as there was no eligible faculty available. “Therefore, we have roped in two guides from St Aloysius College and one from SDM College in Ujire,” he added.
Similarly, the practice could be extended to other departments such as library science, statistics, education, and others which are completely run by guest faculties. “MU has taken a bold step to bring in PhD guides from other colleges. It will be applied to other departments as well, so that aspirants are not deprived of their chance,” Yadapadithaya added.
According to the registrar of the university, PhD notifications are typically issued for all departments at the same time. The reason for issuing notification only to journalism is that it has not been done for the last three years. All the eligible faculty in the department had retired. Meanwhile, the PhD notification will be soon be issued to other departments as well.
