KANPUR: Mayor Pramila Pandey said that a separate budget would be allocated for the historical library in Gandhi Bhawan in Phool Bagh KEM hall for the upkeep of the rare books kept there.
She was at the historical library on inspection when she noticed that the library was in a bad condition. The rare books kept in the library were covered by dust and it appeared that the place was not cleaned or dusted for years.
Annoyed over the lack of maintenance she reprimanded the Kanpur Development Authority employees present there as caretaker. The mayor ordered the KDA employees to ensure that the books in the library are cleaned and dusting is done regularly.
The historical library has around 40,000 books which are getting spoiled due to mismanagement. She said that she would soon sit with the vice chairman KDA to discuss the restoration of this historic library and a separate budget would be allocated for the library and to conserve the more than hundred years old rare books kept there.
Later, talking to reporters, the mayor said that she would also take up the proposal of converting it into a digital library with the officials. Meanwhile, she issued instructions for proper arrangement of water in the library, enhancement of time of library and cleanliness as well as beautification of the library.
Later in a meeting with the health officials, the mayor expressed her displeasure over finding heaps of garbage at various places in the city during inspection. She said that especially Parmat and Phoolbagh areas needed to focus on cleanliness.
She said that it was necessary to maintain sanitation and cleanliness to check the spread of diseases like diarrohea.
As per the mayor’s directives, the municipal commissioner Shiva Sharanappa GN directed the officials that all safai nayaks should stay in the area and manage the cleaning work and garbage collection and lifting daily. Besides, they were also asked to make a separate team for cleanliness in the Parmat area. They were also asked to ensure sprinkling lime with malathion and to lift carcasses of dead pigs to be picked up daily as many pigs were dying due to African swine fever.
Additional municipal commissioner Suryakant Tripathi, Nagar Swasthya Adhikari Ajay Sankhwar and Amit Singh, and all zonal sanitation officials were present in the meeting.
