Corporator KV Sridhar inspects a black spot in Ward No. 3 where the city residents dump garbage in the open, on Thursday
MYSURU: One of the major challenges faced by the residents living even in the core city areas is garbage menace due to indiscriminate dumping at some spots in the night time. Now, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) is spending Rs 2.7 crore on eliminating these black spots across the city.
Meanwhile, a corporator has hired security guards to guard eight such black spots in his ward to ensure that people do not dump garbage.
Corporator KV Sridhar has taken up this experiment in Ward No. 3, Mahadeshwara Badavane, which is near several industries and several hospitals including Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research.
These security guards are keeping a vigil at these blackspots where garbage is dumped in two shifts - between 5am to 11am and 5pm to 11pm. "People come with garbage to dump here. But we request them to give the waste to the pourakarmikas instead of throwing it in public places," said the security guards.
"There were 22 blackspots in my ward. We were able to clear 14 of them. As garbage dumping continued in the rest of the eight places, security guards are deputed in these places since August 15, who educate and discourage those who try to dump garbage," said Sridhar.
The black spots are an eye sore for the city's beauty. Stray cattle, mosquito, and flies also create trouble for the residents. To make my ward black spot free, I decided to post security guards to guard these blackspots, he explained. According to the locals, many people who stay alone, and work in the factories and facilities nearby, throw garbage in these black spots.
According to Usharani, a resident of Railway Layout near Raghavendra Swamy Temple, several people throw garbage regularly in the night time at these black spots. "It was unbearable to stay near these blackspots," she recalled and said stench was emanating from a blackspot near her home until recently. Now the spot is being guarded by a security guard.
According to the MCC officials, a drive has been taken up to make the city garbage blackspot free. MCC commissioner G Lakshmikanth Reddy informed that Rs 30 lakh has been released to every zone in the corporation limit for this purpose. "A total of Rs 2.7 crore has been released for all the nine zones," he said.
"The drive is in progress," he said.
