India was the first Asian nation to recognise the effectiveness of the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) model in promoting exports, said Union Minister Piyush Goyal.
While addressing the Bhoomi Poojan ceremony of the Common Facility Centre (CFC) building in Santacruz Electronics Export Processing Zone (SEEPZ) in Mumbai, he said that SEEPZ contributes a total of Rs 30,000 crore worth of exports.
Goyal added that SEEPZ would be known as the ‘golden gateway’ to global markets and added that mega CFC will be a groundbreaking project which will boost the global competitiveness of the gems and jewellery sector, offering modern machinery and technical assistance.
"Given its large exports and employment potential, the government is making every effort to boost the Gems and Jewellery sector," he said.
Goyal stated that FTAs with UAE and Australia has opened several doors for the sector. Exports of plain gold jewellery are gaining traction post-India-UAE CEPA and negotiations are ongoing with the EU, UK and Canada.
