Panaji: Goa police on Friday refuted allegations by Hyderabad police commissioner C V Anand, who had said that he did not receive cooperation in arresting the alleged owner of Curlies, Edwin Nunes, in a narcotics case. Goa DGP Jaspal Singh said that no such request was received for any assistance in the arrest of Nunes.
“Goa police have come across a statement allegedly made by the commissioner of police, Hyderabad, regarding non-cooperation by Goa police in arresting Edwin Nunes for the latter’s alleged involvement in drug peddling in Hyderabad,” Singh said. “On August 16, 2022, Goa police, on its own enquiry from Hyderabad police, received information regarding the registration of an FIR at Osmania University police station under the NDPS Act in which 174 persons are named as accused.”
“However, no request whatsoever was received for any assistance for the arrest of any of the accused persons, and in particular for the arrest of Edwin Nunes.”
To date, no request for any assistance in investigation of this FIR has been made to Goa police, said Singh.
“Significantly, Edwin Nunes is in the custody of Goa police in a FIR filed at Anjuna police station under the NDPS Act. It is pertinent to note that on September 1, the fact of the arrest of Edwin Nunes was also communicated to Osmania University police station, offering assistance. However, no request for assistance has been received in response so far,” said Singh.
Goa police follow a policy of zero tolerance towards illegal drug trafficking, said the DGP.
“Goa police are at the forefront of the fight against drugs. Keeping with its professional ethos and long tradition of professional policing, Goa police has always assisted all state and central police departments that have approached it for assistance,” said Singh.
Anand had said a day earlier that Nunes is one of the six bulk drug suppliers in the country, but that the Hyderabad police have received no help from Goa police in arresting him.
“During our police’s investigation into the sale of drugs in Hyderabad, we came to know that one Priteesh Narayan Borkar was supplying them to consumers. We also found out that Priteesh’s boss was Edwin. Though we went to Goa to nab both of them, we could get hold of Priteesh alone,” the commissioner said. Anand said that Edwin’s name had cropped up in a drug peddling case on August 17.
