Ludhiana: A fire broke out at the main garbage dump yard on Tajpur Road on Thursday afternoon. The nearby residents complained about smoke coming from dump site which aggravate their breathing problems. The fire officials however claimed that they have sent fire tenders at the site and they will control the fire soon.
Taking serious note of frequent fires at the dump yard, the National Green Tribunal had already asked the civic body to deposit Rs 100 crore with deputy commissioner so that required arrangements could be done at the site. The NGT had suggested certain measures at the dump yard to avoid fire incidents in future. The fire arrangements and ways to stop creation of methane gas were suggested in the orders.
However, officials did not take any measure to come up with said arrangements at the dump yard. They have failed to start processing of garbage too so far. During the summers, frequent fires at the dump yard gave a tough time for the nearby residents.
Sub-fire officer Aatish Rai said, “A fire tender from Focal Point was sent to the dump site to control the flames. In the past few days, temperature has risen, which seems to have caused fire in the garbage dump.”
The fire was brought under control by evening.
Meanwhile, Congress councillor from Ward 15 Kanchan Malhotra claimed that they witnessed the flames on Thursday and informed the authorities concerned about the same. She and other residents said if necessary measures were not taken, people staying in nearby localities may face serious problems.
