Sham call centre that offered tech support, conned many busted in Gurugram

Seven desktop computer systems and one modem were recovered from the accused
GURUGRAM: Six people were arrested on Wednesday for running a call centre that cheated foreign nationals on the pretext of technical support. Seven computers and one modem were recovered from the premises by the police.
The call centre was operating from the basement of a bungalow in Sector 42, police said. The six have been identified as Thachang Tungshanao, Vikas Bhadana, Paras Sood, Avinash, Ram Bishua and manager of the call centre Abhilash Singh.
When the police team asked the manager for documents related to the call centre operation, he was not able to produce.
During interrogation, it was found that the owner -Sachin Taneja, would send advertisement pop-up for technical assistance to US and Canadian nationals through various mediums, including Norton antivirus, McAfee, Webroot, among others.
After receiving a response from the pop-ups, a call would be made from a toll-free number to the nationals by the cheaters pretending to be tech support officials. In the name of resolving their issues, the accused would cheat people of $200 (Rs 15,00) to $500 (Rs40,000).
The police said that hundreds of foreign nationals were cheated of crores. The house where the call centre was running belonged to Sachin Taneja.
An FIR has been registered at Cyber police station under sections 420 (cheating and dishonesty), 120B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC and 66D (cheating by personation), 75 (offence or contravention committed outside India) of the IT Act.
"Sachin and Abhilash were primarily involved in running the call centre. The other accused who were employees were working for Rs 40-45,000 per month along with incentives. Sachin is absconding," said ACP (crime) Preet Pal Sangwan.
