KANPUR: Four men were arrested on Tuesday for kidnapping a 10-year-old boy for ransom and later drowning him in the
Ganga in the Cantt police station area of the city. The boy had gone missing from his house on Monday at around 8.30pm.
The police said that the accused had allegedly killed the child by drowning him in the Ganga after kidnapping him. After killing the boy, the kidnappers demanded a ransom of Rs 6 lakh from his family members on Tuesday.
Subsequently, the family members of the boy alerted the Cantt police, who launched an investigation. With the help of electronic surveillance, the police procured the details of the mobile phone number from which the ransom call was made. Besides, they also extracted the CCTV footage of the spot from where the child went missing. With the help of this information, the police managed to zero-in on the accused late Tuesday night.
Raids were conducted and the police nabbed the four men, who confessed to their crime and told the police that the child was murdered an hour after the kidnapping on Monday itself. After that, the kidnappers had made the call for ransom.
However, the body of the boy could not be retrieved from the Ganga.
Police said the boy, identified as Munna alias Rehman, son of Mursalin of Maiku Purwa in the Cantt police station area, was allegedly murdered by the men living in the same locality.
"The boy was kidnapped and taken to Bargadiya Ghat on a two-wheeler and allegedly killed there by drowning in the river Ganga by the accused
