A cryptocurrency company which hired Matt Damon for its Super Bowl commercial last year, sent $10.4 million to a woman by mistake who then used the money to buy a mansion for her sister in Melbourne.

Due to an unfortunate typo, Crypto.com issued a customer $10.5 million instead of the expected $100 to Melbourne resident Thevamanogari Manivel, according to reports.

The transfer occurred in May last year. But the crypto exchange firm realised the mistake only in December 2021 while conducting an audit, according to a report in News.com.au.

After receiving the money, Manivel split the money among six other people including her daughter and sister. Crypto.com sued Manivel and six others who received the money.

They erroneously transferred $10,474,143 to the customer, according to documents filed in the court.

The woman reportedly spent $1.35 million on a lavish, four-bedroom, four-bathroom mansion as a gift to her sister, Thilagavathy Gangadory instead of reporting the inaccurate return to the exchange.

The Victorian Supreme Court on Friday ordered Manivel to return the money (with interest) to the exchange - which amounts to $27,269.64, as reported by New York Post. The court has asked Manivel to sell the house and use the proceeding to reimburse the crypto exchange company.

The company had filed the court papers in February and froze Manivel's accounts, however, most of the money had dispersed to Gangadory and the other five people by then.
