THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A fast-track special court here on Wednesday sentenced a 35-year-old man to rigorous imprisonment for 25 years and also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh for sexually assaulting a five-year-old boy.
Muthappa, of Puthuval Puthenveedu at Fisherman Colony in Cheriyathura, was sentenced by judge R Sudarsan. In default of the payment, the accused shall undergo rigorous imprisonment for an additional one year.
The incident took place on April 8, 2017 at 1pm. The five-year-old boy belonged to a migrant family from Assam that came here to work at a construction site at Valiyathura. The accused, who was living near the construction site, subjected the boy to unnatural sexual assault while the child was playing near the site where his parents were working.
The boy explained the incident to his mother. On examining the boy’s private parts, the parents realized that he was subjected to sexual assault. Subsequently, a case was registered at Valiyathura police station. During scientific examination, the semen of the accused was found on the underwear of the boy. A DNA test confirmed that the semen cells belonged to him as it matched the DNA of his blood samples.
On behalf of the prosecution, special public prosecutor RS Vijay Mohan and AL Krishnapriya appeared before the court. As many as 13 witnesses were examined during the trial and 17 documents were also presented. The investigation was done by KB Manoj Kumar and V Jayaprakash.
The remand period of the accused was deducted from the period of imprisonment sentenced by the court. tnn
