THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Sea erosion is not a new phenomenon as it started even before the construction of Vizhinjam port, said MP Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday.
However, the issues faced by the fisherfolk are of concern and the state government must do the needful to address them. "Coastal erosion is a concern. The state and central governments must join hands in implementing measures to prevent it. Our nation wages war with China for occupying our land. Similarly, the sea must also be considered an enemy as it engulfs our shores. Tamil Nadu has done something great to prevent coastal erosion and we must learn lessons from them. A study in this regard is welcome," said Tharoor.
"The government must understand the issues of fishermen. Many of them are in rehabilitation centers, which are devoid of basic facilities. They all must be rehabilitated soon. More subsidies on kerosene will be a huge relief for them as they are forced to pay huge amounts," he said. tnn
