LUCKNOW / RANCHI: Uttar Pradesh reported only one case of communal violence in 2021, according to latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, while Jharkhand topped with 100 cases.
UP additional DGP (law and order) Prashant Kumar attributed the sharp decline in communal violence to strict and persuasive action against gangsters and mafia, surveillance and quick police response, and police social media cells keeping a close watch on provocative/fake messages and giving out correct information. Cases have been dropping since 45 in 2016 to 36 in 2017, he said.
A state government spokesperson said: "It's a major achievement of the Yogi Adityanath government. The biggest state of the country recorded just one case of communal violence in 2021, against 100 cases in Jharkhand, 77 in Maharashtra, and 22 in Rajasthan." Jharkhand is followed by Maharashtra, Bihar (51) and Haryana (40).
Opposition BJP said the NCRB data reflects failures of the JMM-led coalition government. Its policy of appeasement for votes is creating disharmony in society, BJP state chief Deepak Prakash said.
JMM general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya blamed BJP for the situation. "Ever since the mahagathbandhan government came to power in 2019, BJP has been involved in creating social discord. The number of riots may be high, but there has been no casualty. The administration has acted quickly to bring the situation under control."
Jharkhand registered 1,834 cases of rioting - much less than Bihar, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, UP, Tamil Nadu and Odisha.
