5 farmers end life in 5 days in Maregaon tehsil of Yavatmal

Yavatmal: Five farmers have died by suicide in Maregaon tehsil over the last five days, including two on Tuesday. Local farmers said the suicides were by debt-ridden farmers, hit hard by excessive rains in villages Rameshwar, Mhaisdodka, Narsala, Dandgaon and Shivni (Dhobe).
Of the two suicides on Tuesday, one was young farmer Sachin Subhash Bodhekar (28), a resident of village Rameshwar. He was unmarried, and helped his father in their 2acre farm. When nobody was present in the house, Sachin consumed pesticide on Tuesday evening. He was rushed to Maregaon Public Health Centre, where the doctor declared him dead.
In the other suicide earlier the same day, Haridas Tonpe committed suicide in the morning. A small land holder farmer, Tonpe (48) committed suicide by consuming pesticide at about 10.30am in his house. He had 5acre of rain fed barren agricultural land. He owed crop loans to nationalised banks and private money lenders. He was disappointed due to the incessant rains that had destroying his crops of cotton and tur. He had been worried about debts and the family liabilities ahead.
On Tuesday, when his wife had gone to the farm and children were at school, Haridas consumed pesticide when he was alone in the house. The quantity of poison was so large that he had breathed his last before his wife returned from the farm. He is survived by mother, wife, a daughter and a son.
The other farmers who committed suicide over last five days in different villages of Maregaon tehsil are Totaram Chincholkar, Gajanan Musley, and Avinash Meshram.
